President Joko Widodo inaugurates solar power plant in Kupang

JAKARTA (rambuenergy.com) – President Joko Widodo on Sunday (Dec. 27) inaugurated solar power plant with capacity of 5 MWp in Oelpuah village, Central Kupang subdistrict, Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara.

The solar power plant was built by PT LEN Industri, which is also the independent power producer of the power plant.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said told the President that the inauguration of the solar power plant will help resolve power shortage in Kupang. Currently, the electricity consumption in Kupang already reached peak capacity of 68 MW.

The total cost to develop the solar power plant reached US$11.2 million. The solar panel is connected with PLN’s power grid. During recent trial, when rainy season, the solar power could still supply electricity of 4 MWp.

The construction of the solar power plant project began in January 2015 and was completed six months ahead of scheduled.

The electricity price is set at around $22 cent per kWh, far higher than electricity purchased from coal fired power plant of $5-6 cent per kWh. However, solar power is clean. (*)
