Pertamina appoints Garuda Indonesia to operate its Pondok Cabe airport, maintains aircraft

JAKARTA (rambuenergy.com) – State owned energy company PT Pertamina has appointed flag-carrier PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk (GIAA) to operate its Pondok Cabe airstrip in the outskirt of Jakarta and may transform it into a commercial airport for short-to-medium flights, therefore, allowing Pertamina to focus on its core business.

The companies signed the agreement on Monday, facilitated by the Ministry of State Enterprises.

The Pondok Cabe airport occupies a land plot of 110 hectares. Pertamina currently owns the airstrip as well as charter aircraft Pelita Air services, which mainly serve offshore oil and gas operations owned by the company as well as by other oil and gas companies.

Garuda President Director Arif Wibowo, the Pondok Cabe airport meets the conditions for a commercial airport that could accommodate aircraft of ATR 72-600 class with a seat capacity of 72 passengers, which are used by its subsidiary, a low cost carrier, Citilink.

“We are ready to operate the Pondok Cabe airport commercially. We are targeting to fully operate the airstrip in March 2016,” Arif Wibowo said after signing the heads of agreement (HOA) at the State Enterprise Ministry office on Monday.

Pondok Cabe airstriop could be used as a commercial airport that can be landed by ATR-72-600 with capacity of 72 passengers.

Arif said its subsidiary Citilink may use the airstrip to serve flights to eight cities, namely  namely Lubuk Linggau and Palemabng in South Sumatera, Pangkalan Bun and Ketapang cities in Kalimantan, Semarang and Jogyakarta in Central Java, Tanjung Karang town in Lampung, Sumatera, and possibly Cilacap in southwestern part of Central Java.

President Director of Pertamina Dwi Sutjipto added the company is currently repairing the 1,984 meters long and 45 meters wide runway Pondok Cabe airport and terminal facility.

He said Pertamina and Garuda could work together and explore business potentials, including the aircraft maintenance facility of Pelita Air Services, owned by (Pertamina.

He said the commercial operation of Pondok Cabe airport as well as other airstrips owned by Pertamina, could contribute to additional income to the company around Rp40 billion-Rp50 billion per year.   Pertamina and Garuda would also cooperate in the sales of aviation fuels or jet fuels and bio-fuels to all Garuda aircraft at a competitive price.
