President Joko Widodo pushes PAL to support strategic industries development

JAKARTA (rambuenergy.com) – President Joko Widodo at the weekend visited the shipyard and production facilities of state owned PT PAL Indonesia in Surabaya, East Java.

The President wants to assess the readiness of PT PAL to support the country’s drive to be stand on its own feet in production various military equipment, including navy ships.

The visit was made after the Joko Widodo government set up an Industry Policy Committee in December to develop national defense industry. The President wants to find out the real condition and the capacity of the company’s shipyard and production facilities and then set up a plan to develop it.

“The President wants to see directly that the performance of defense industry is yet to reach its optimum level,” Cabinet Secretary Andi Widjajanto was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.

He said the government has at least seven strategic industries development going forward, including developing submarine, fighter jets and rudal. The program will involve domestic and state owned companies, including PT PAL, in particular in the development of the submarine and navy ships. (*)
