JAKARTA (Rambu Energy) – President-elect Joko Widodo held a warm meeting with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg at Jakarta governor office Balai Kota DKI Jakarta on Monday morning for about 50 minutes starting from 09.00 a.m. They held a brief press conference after the meeting, packed by journalists and photographers.
Zuckerberg told reporters that he was interested with the democratic process in Indonesia and the process to elect their leader. The process was widely discussed in social media, prompting him to visit this nation of 240 million people.
“I want to witness directly and who knows I can assist to connect the people and their leader,” Zuckerberg was quoted by detik.com as saying.
Joko Widodo, popularly called Jokowi, said both discussed about the progress of Facebook in Indonesia and also discussed about how to utilise Facebook in developing small and micro economy.
“He will cooperate with us in areas of tax and internet access. We will follow it up. We haven’t discussed the details,” Jokowi said.
After the meeting, both went to Tanah Abang popular traditional clothing market in Central Jakarta with Jokowi’s car Toyota Kijang. Both received with enthusiasm by clothing traders in Tanah Abang market
Zuckerberg arrived in Indonesia at the weekend. “I just arrived in Indonesia and hiked up Borobudur to watch the sunrise. Tomorrow for Internet.org. I’m looking forward to meeting with developers, operator partners and government leaders in Jakarta,” Zuckerberg said in his official Facebook page.
Observers have said that social media, including Facebook, played a major part of his successful in winning the Presidential election in July. He garnered public support from the social media and helped him to interact directly with the people and his supporters. (*)
