At least 10 people killed in oil well fire in Aceh

JAKARTA (RambuEnergy.com) – An oil well in Pasir Putih village, Ranto Peureulak, East Aceh was hit by fire just after midnight due to illegal drilling. The fire was contained at around 09.00, Antara, state-owned news agency, reported.

Ranto Peureulak Sectoral Police (Polsek) Head Iptu Musa said the firefighters were sent to the location immediately after the fire hit the well at around 00.30 local time, and followed by evacuating the victims. Detik.com reported that at least 10 people killed in the incident and few other people were seriously injured.

The fire triggered by over-flow of oil on the surface, prompting villagers to collect the oil spill. However, fire suddenly broke out on the surface and quickly engulfed the surrounding area, including three houses.

When the fire hit the well, the drilling of the well has already reached measure depth of 250 meters. (*)
