President Jokowi visits victims of Aceh earthquake, assessing rescue efforts

JAKARTA ( – President Joko Widodo yesterday has arrived in Aceh to visit the victims of 6.5 SR earthquake that has rocked Pidie Jaya, Pidie and Bireun in Aceh Darrussalam on Dec. 7. The earthquake has killed 102 people caused by rumbled buildings, with hundreds of people injured.

State news agency Antara reported that the President is scheduled to head to Pidie Jaya with Superpuma  helicopter at 7.30 a.m. He is scheduled to visit a number of hospitals including Sigli hospital as well as hospitals in Pidie Jaya. The President will also visit mosques that have been heavily damaged as well as muslim boarding school.

Currently, authorities rescuers have been racing against  time since the earthquake rocked the region at 05.00 on Dec. 7 to save lives. Military and aids from private sectors have and are being sent into region to help support the victims.

Indonesia has also received offers from other countries such as Malaysia, Singapore as well as European Union to assist the rescue activities as well as help the earthquake victims.

The earthquake reminds people of massive earthquake, which followed by huge tsunami, that killed hundreds thousands of people on Dec. 26, 2004.
